Is Trail missing a manhole cover? If so, public works might want to call their counterparts in Nelson, because there’s one in Railtown clearly marked “City of Trail.”
It’s near the corner of Railway and Silica, across from the Selkirk Veterinary Hospital. No idea how long it’s been there, although I first noticed it around 2010.
It turns out this is not the only instance of a wandering manhole cover in our area. In the Walmart parking lot in Trail, you will find this one.
And in Nakusp, you will find this one on the west side of 3rd Avenue NW between 4th and 5th streets:
Thanks to Kyle Kusch for telling me about it. He says it has been there as long as he can remember.
Also in Nakusp, in the arena parking lot is this sewer grate that says it is “Property of King County.” As in Seattle.
Finally, there is a manhole cover downtown Castlegar that escaped from Creston. Thanks to Jayme Jones for telling me about it and sending this picture.
Updated on April 29, 2018 to add the Nakusp/Delta cover, June 23, 2021 to add the Trail/Maple Ridge cover, Sept. 21, 2022 to add the Castlegar/Creston cover, and Oct. 30, 2024 to add the Nakusp/King County sewer grate.
